Anna is the main protagonist in the novel. It is through her eyes that the baloney of the Plague in Eyam, 1666, is told. Anna changes during the novel from being a dewy-eyed and poor miners widow, who is married at fifteen to escape the violent ho intentionhold of her drunken father and thoughtless stepmother to being a self-educated, mature, woman of the world. Although thither are moments when Anna feels that there is nothing left to live for her life, she finds an inner strength and resilience that not only propels her through the tragedy, but also entirelyows her to grow in stature as a result.
When her husband dies in a mining accident and her youngest son is only four, Anna goes to puzzle out as a maid at nearby Bradford antechamber and also at the Rectory.
