How Media Shapes Society

The mass media take part in shaping how bon ton perceives race. In his es show Frames of Reference, author Michael Eric Dyson (2006) argues how the media portrayed people and racial differences after hurricane Katrina. In the beginning of his essay, Dyson discusses images of the Katrina aftermath. In these images there are depicted a young black male who in each arm carried a large trash infrastructure as he walked through the flood water and dickens young uncontaminating male and female, both carrying a hike with food items in their hands through the flood water. Michael Dyson revealed a disparity between the medias portrayal of blacks and whites after the hurricane Katrina calamity. In addition Dyson specifically highlights the racist remarks about African Americans as lawless thugs. The photographs really demonstrated how important the captions are presented: the media determine African Americans as criminal and savage while the flannel Americans were surviving.
Dyson (2006) explained that the opinion stated towards the two photographs in which the captions say it all: the young black man loots his groceries while the white youths find theirs. In effect, society is influenced into thinking through coloured assumptions that the young black man is guilty and the white youths ride out innocent.



After the hurricane Katrina disaster, clearly no one could have piece groceries, and would have had to desperately find alternatives to obtain necessities. People were rigid in the human instinct mode of survival and desperately had to find important belongings in order to stick out alive. In spite of this, both are in resembling situations and yet the media suggests that color matters when classifying who is moral versus immoral. The media can manipulate all experiences.
